The snow on the Himalayas adds majesty to the mountains and the innumerable flower patches of vivid colors add to its beauty. When the sun shines hot on this field, thousands of flowers bloom here. This valley was unknown till a British mountaineer Frank Smythe first discovered this place. In 1931, Smythe wanted to scale a peak in Garhwal called Kamet. While returning after successfully completing his mission, he took the western pass and lost his way and reached this valley after many difficulties. Thus, was born the Valley of Flowers Trek. The beauty of the valley while in full bloom is unparalleled & unlike any other valley in the entire Himalayas.

Drive from Rishikesh to Govindghat

After breakfast, we travel towards Devprayag and then along River Alakananda on the Badrinath highway to Govindghat. The drive takes us past the famous Panch Prayags of Uttarakhand. These five places, in descending order of river convergence, are Vishnuprayag, Nandprayag, Karnaprayag, Rudraprayag & Devprayag. The confluence of the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers in the town of Devprayag gives birth to the holy Ganges. On reaching Govindghat we check into the hotel and relax.

Drive to Badrinath, Mana and back to Govindghat.

We drive down after breakfast to visit Badrinath temple and later go on to explore Mana, the famous first village on the Indo-Tibet border. The village has mythological significance. It is said that the Pandav brothers crossed this place on their way to Swargarohini. Rishi Vyas is said to have composed the Vedas sitting in a cave over here. This is also the village where one can see the famous Saraswati River emerge and disappear. We return to our hotel at Govindghat by late afternoon and prepare for the next day’s hike.

Govindghat to Poolna & trek to Ghangaria (10,003 ft)

From Govindghat, we drive 4 km to Poolna and start our hike along a well-maintained pilgrim trail to Ghangaria. There are lot of trailside eating places and tea shops where one can stop to rest or have a cup of tea while enjoying the beauty of the valley. Upon arrival at Ghangaria, we explore the surroundings in the evening.

Trek to Valley of Flowers (12,000 ft)

After an early breakfast, we start our hike towards the Valley of Flowers from Ghangaria. The valley is a botanist’s dreamland! One can find flowers, leaves, and buds of various shapes, sizes, and colours, all growing together. It is an enchanting sight with an impressive array of rare wildflowers like Blue Poppy, Meadow Geranium, Snake Foil, Hooked Stick Seed, Himalayan Rose, River Anemone, White Leaf Hog Foot, Dog Flower, Brahma kamal etc. The entire valley is generally a riot of colours with mesmerising views of green, yellow, red, blue, white, pink, purple, and more colours. It is surrounded by mountains with trees at lower levels, brown and grey soil in the middle, and bright snow at the top. Sunny deep blue skies create the perfect picturesque view beyond your imagination. After absorbing the beauty of the Valley of Flowers we hike back to Ghangaria.

Trek to Hemkund Sahib (14203 ft)

After an early breakfast, we hike to Hemkund Sahib from Ghangaria. In the Sikh’s holy book – Guru Granth Sahib, Guru Gobind Singh recounts that in a previous life, he meditated on the shores of a lake surrounded by seven snow-capped mountains, now recognised as Hemkund. A steep climb brings you to Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara. The lake lies just behind it. The Hemkund Sahib Lake remains frozen for six months. Warm yourself in the Gurudwara and have generous helpings of hot tea and khichdi. Walk around to the other side of Hemkund Lake which exudes an aura of peace and serenity. The lake is crystal clear, undisturbed, and has the reflections of the mountains surrounding it. You can see the rare Himalayan flower Brahma Kamal growing abundantly around here. This flower grows only at heights above 3000 m. By late afternoon we hike back to Ghangaria.
